For Week 11, “The NFL Today” traveled to Highmark Stadium for the NFL’s latest rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs – more specifically Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes.
CBS Sports color commentator Jim Nantz was the guest panelist today due to his first-hand knowledge of the rivalry. Nantz, who has called five of seven showdowns between Allen and Mahomes, claimed that today’s game “has a lot riding” on it.
“On the Kansas City side, if they win [they] have such a favorable schedule the rest of the way. It’s not only a three-peat but a run at an undefeated season,” Nantz said about the Chiefs.
The Chiefs enter this game 9-0. While they have narrowly escaped many times, like a true championship team they continue to find ways to win. As for the favorable schedule, the Chiefs will have the Carolina Panthers in Week 11 followed by two division games at home – Las Vegas Raiders (Week 13) and the Los Angeles Chargers (Week 14).
The Houston Texans (Week 16) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (Week 17) are the only threats to their undefeated run if the Chiefs win today.
“If Buffalo wins, hey you’re one game off of maybe having the repeat matchup [at home]…They would certainly have the second game of the postseason here as opposed to Arrowhead,” Nantz said about the Bills.

The Bills are currently 8-2 and are in first place in the AFC East. Despite having regular season success, the Chiefs remain the thorn in their side come playoffs.
In 2020, the Chiefs beat the Bills in the AFC Championship game. Then in the 2021 season, the Bills lost to the Chiefs again in an overtime thriller during the divisional round. Last season they were booted by the Chiefs again in the divisional round.
“I had the chance to do a great majority of the matchups between [Tom Brady] and [Peyton Manning].
They met 17 times, all those AFC championship games, regular season games. This is the modern-day version of that and it’s a thrill,” Nantz said about the Mahomes-Allen rivalry.
Brady won the rivalry 11-6. Two of those wins came in the playoffs while Manning beat Brady three times in their postseason history. The legendary QBs had the most combined wins, passing touchdowns, pass yards, MVPs, and Pro Bowl selections of any opposing quarterbacks in postseason history.
Mahomes currently has the edge 4-3 (including playoffs). Allen’s only wins have been during the regular season. Maybe he’ll have the chance to even the score today and take the lead in the playoffs.
“I do think these two teams are going to meet again in January.”
