Former Dallas Cowboys third-string quarterback Trey Lance signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers this spring to compete for a spot behind franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.
However, during the early portion of offseason workouts, Taylor Heinicke is the leader in the clubhouse for the second-string role in Los Angeles. … at least according to one bad-news review.
“Rookie safety Jaylen Jones picked off an ill-advised off-platform throw from quarterback Trey Lance, who has been trading off with [D.J.] Uiagalelei as the third-string quarterback. Rookie tight end Oronde Gadsen was coming open on a corner route. Lance was drifting to his left, and the ball was severely underthrown,” The Athletic’s Daniel Popper wrote.
Lance was selected with the third overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers dealt Lance to the Cowboys in 2023 for a 2024 fourth-round draft pick (which became Malik Mustapha) after naming Brock Purdy their starting quarterback.
Lance’s tenure in Dallas was underwhelming, to say the least—though there weren’t lofty expectations among Cowboys Nation when he arrived. He plays the quarterback position with reckless decision-making, which led to a five-interception performance in last year’s preseason finale against (ironically) the Chargers … probably his most memorable moment in a Cowboys uniform.
Lance has another opportunity to find his footing with the Chargers, who kept three quarterbacks on the roster last season. Although he isn’t the next man up behind Herbert at the moment, he should be able to beat out rookie quarterback DJ Uiagelelei for the third spot on the depth chart.
Hopefully, Lance will make the most of what could be his last opportunity to prove himself in the NFL.
