The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball. As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, the front office will look for outside help to shore up the team’s weaknesses for a playoff push.
The Phillies could add an outfielder to improve an inconsistent platoon in both left field and center field this season, but the top priority is the bullpen. After the huge series win over the NL East rival New York Mets, the Phillies’ bullpen owns the fifth-worst ERA (4.63) in the majors, and opposing offenses have the sixth-highest batting average (.259) against them.
Despite losing José Alvarado, a left-handed reliever, due to a suspension that made him ineligible for the playoffs, the Phillies don’t necessarily need to prioritize acquiring a southpaw at the deadline. The Athletic’s Matt Gelb believes the Phillies shouldn’t handcuff themselves to lefties and instead go after right-handed relievers (subscription required).
Come playoff time, the Phillies will get left-handed help in the bullpen. Teams typically shift to a three or four-man starting rotation in October rather than the traditional five-man rotation.
The Phillies feature three lefties in the starting rotation, and one of them will join the bullpen during the playoffs. Whether it’s Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo or Ranger Suárez, the bullpen will get a significant boost.
There will be significantly more right-handed relievers available on the trade block than left-handers. Aroldis Chapman is arguably the top left-handed reliever who could be available at the deadline, but the Boston Red Sox are in the thick of the AL Wild Card race and may hold on to the legendary closer.
Although there will be competition with many contenders looking for bullpen help, the right-handed reliever market is plentiful. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski shouldn’t shy away from trading for a high-leverage righty, especially with one of the left-handed starters set to join the bullpen in the playoffs.
As the deadline nears, a few names to watch are Colorado Rockies Jake Bird, Washington Nationals Kyle Finnegan, Baltimore Orioles Félix Bautista, Pittsburgh Pirates David Bednar and Miami Marlins Anthony Bender.
