FRISCO – There is nobody who knows former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup who wishes anything but good things for him.
But wishing ain’t doing.
And things don’t seem to be going well in Gallup’s NFL comeback bid.
Gallup, a former third-round pick in 2018, retired last offseason after being released by Dallas, and then spending just a moment with Las Vegas.
But this offseason?
He announced he wants to make a return to football.
Gallup did not suit up in the 2024 season after announcing his retirement. He has since been on Las Vegas’ “reserve/retired” list.
The Raiders released him from that list, making him an eligible free agent and the Washington Commanders bit on the idea, signing him to a cheap prove-it deal.
And word is he’s not proving anything, with one DC site suggesting he’s a “questionable Commanders signing (that is) already backfiring.”
The issue? It’s injury related, and with coach Dan Quinn not being forthcoming about the nature of the ailment, the mind wonders if it has anything to do with that torn ACL in 2021 that completely changed his career trajectory.
Gallup, 29, was a third-round pick who played six seasons with the Cowboys from 2018-23.
In his most recent campaign, the classy Colorado State product registered 418 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the only season in his career where he played all 17 regular-season games.
Gallup – who admits himself he’s never been quite the same since the injury – was released by Dallas in 2023 to free up cap space after three straight seasons of less than 500 receiving yards.
Gallup’s un-retirement is something to cheer for. But “questionable Commanders signing (that is) already backfiring” makes it sound like we might want to hold our applause.
