Patriots place veteran offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer on retired list

The New England Patriots placed offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer on the retired list Tuesday, opening a 90-man roster spot.

Schweitzer, 31, arrived in Foxborough on a one-year contract in free agency. The veteran had been in contention at left guard and as center depth during voluntary organized team activities. He became a non-participant for back-to-back mandatory minicamp practices this week.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft, Schweitzer’s run spanned 90 games and 62 starts. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound San Jose State product set out with the Atlanta Falcons before making stops with the Washington Commanders and New York Jets.

During his 2023 and 2024 campaigns elsewhere in the AFC East, Schweitzer was limited to 10 games due to calf and hand issues that resulted in stints on injured reserve.

He handled 4,572 offensive snaps during his career, primarily working at both guard and center while also spelling in as a tackle and an eligible tight end.

Patriots players will remain at Gillette Stadium through Wednesday before breaking for the summer. Head coach Mike Vrabel’s first practice of training camp is set for 10:15 a.m. ET on July 23.
