NFL Discuss: Should the Chiefs Replace the Cowboys as ‘America’s Team’? Anchor Calls Cowboys’ Glory Days ‘Ancient History’

Every time the Dallas Cowboys are underachieving, the title of “America’s Team” gets brought up and how it should be stripped from the team.

It won’t happen, stop trying to make it happen. But I digress.

Today CNN sports anchor Don Riddell took to Instagram to give the latest take as to why the Cowboys should be stripped of the title and how it should belong to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996, and you know how many playoff games they’ve won in the last 25 years? Four,” Riddell said in the clip.

“Don’t you think that a country that likes to think of itself as a winner should give its affection to a team that actually wins things?”

With the Chiefs trying to win three-consecutive Super Bowls and the team having the support of Taylor Swift and her millions of fans, to Riddell it’s obvious that the Chiefs are now “America’s Team.”

Only problem is that fans loathe the team.

From accusing the refs of backing them to black magic, yes black magic, football fans are collectively rooting against the Chiefs.

Riddell tries to wrap up his argument that Dallas fans should want the Chiefs to have the title.

The Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans and shared a stadium with the Cowboys in the old American Football League. So technically Dallas would still be “America’s Team.”

The only flaw in Riddell’s take is that “America’s Team” was not a self-proclaimed title, it was given to the Cowboys.

In 1979, NFL Films narrator John Facenda dubbed the Boys as “America’s Team” due to how often they flood the TVs, like actors and POTUS.

In the season-opening game, CBS color commentator Pat Summerall also the nickname to refer to the Cowboys.

Legendary head coach Tom Landry was against the nickname but finally caved in. With the air time, the iconic cheerleaders, and “Captain America” Roger Staubach under center the nick name is perfect.

While the on-field success is not there, the Cowboys reign supreme in revenue and are considered the most valuable team in all of sports.

For better or worst, the nickname will stick.
