REPORT: Hated former rival could be the Twins’ answer for one of their biggest needs

Los Angeles Angels v Los Angeles Dodgers

If the Minnesota Twins are going to remain in contention for the duration of the 2025 season, they will need to find an answer to one of the biggest black holes on their roster.

The struggles of Royce Lewis this season, a resumption of what Twins fans saw at the end of last season, may have added third base as a concern area for the Twins ahead of the Trade Deadline.

Long-term, the Twins need to find a way to fix Lewis. Whether that means he takes a temporary trip back to the minor leagues or that he continues to play sparingly at the MLB level while the team works in the background, Lewis needs to get back on track to avoid a larger concern.

However, we’ve reached the point of the season where the Twins may be willing to try different options at third base. Brooks Lee has been the beneficiary of Lewis’ struggles this season, often getting starts at third base.

However, Lee carries a 77 wRC+ on the season. In other words, if the Twins are looking for offense at the trade deadline, Lee wouldn’t be a reason why the front office would avoid targeting an external solution to their third base problem this season.

As Jeff Passan noted for ESPN, the Twins aren’t known for making major moves at the Trade Deadline. Passan doesn’t rule out the Twins making a smaller move, and along those lines, there’s a player mentioned by the ESPN insider who may just be a surprising fit for Minnesota.

Former foe could be a shockingly good fit for the Twins

The player is none other than former Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada. Now with the Los Angeles Angels, Moncada is slashing .237/.336/.505/135 wRC+.

Moncada’s six home runs in 113 plate appearances appear to be doing the heavy lifting of his wRC+ total on the season.

Getting past the odd sight of Moncada potentially in a Twins uniform, he would be an ideal buy-low candidate for the Twins. Between being a rental and the injury history, he likely wouldn’t cost a steep price to acquire from the Angels. If not Moncada, this is the type of move that Twins fans can expect if the team is a buyer at the deadline.
