Dallas Cowboys: Joe Milton Confirms Head Coach’s Intriguing Claim About QB Room

Joe Milton, New England Patriots

A quarterback battle is looming for the Dallas Cowboys, but it will not involve Dak Prescott, who is still firmly entrenched as the team’s top option under center. Prescott is still working his way back to 100 percent form from a season-ending surgery on his hamstring in 2024, and the expectation is that he’ll see action come Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.

Coming back to the aforementioned QB battle, it is for the main backup role behind Prescott, with Will Grier and offseason acquisition Joe Milton expected to compete opposite each other.

Grier has more experience with the Cowboys, though, mostly as a practice player. Milton, on the other hand, is fresh off an NFL rookie season with the New England Patriots that was nothing much to write home about, appearing in only a game.

New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently spoke about the good relationship of Dallas quarterbacks despite the competition for the QB2 job. Milton seconded that take from Schottenheimer.

“It’s great, man,” said Milton, again grinning sizably. “We all have three different games, you know? Dak brings the most experience to the room and Will has been around football throughout his whole life. And then you’ve got me, whereas I didn’t grow up with a quarterback coach.
I just happened to be so athletic, and I bring extra tools.

It remains to be seen whether Milton will win the QB2 gig, but it’s at least great to know for the Cowboys and their fans that their signal-callers are on the same page.
