With mandatory minicamp approaching next week, the Patriots are inching closer to the point in the offseason when some early roster cuts may be made. The new regime has had a good look at most players throughout OTAs over the past few weeks and is more aware of which positions will have the most competition during the summer.

The most prominent group is the wide receivers, with 12 players currently under contract. There are a few names that have remained at the top of the list as those most likely fighting for a spot on this year’s roster, one of whom is Kendrick Bourne.

The veteran signed with the Patriots during the 2021 free agency spending spree and went on to have his best season of his career, working with Josh McDaniels. Since then, he has dealt with being blackballed by former OC Matt Patricia and a season-ending ACL injury that derailed his efforts.

However, being a year removed from that and reuniting with McDaniels this year should make it easier to keep him on the roster. The Patriots are also receiving further validation about why that would be a wise decision through Bourne’s teammates.

The high praise from his teammates should hold more weight in deciding Kendrick Bourne’s future in New England

Although his 2024 season was not memorable, as he recorded just 28 receptions for 305 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, the potential he has, working with the offensive coordinator who helped make him a legitimate offensive threat, adds a level of security about his potential this season.

On top of that, his energy and mentorship to his teammates on and off the field remain one of Bourne’s best qualities, which was discussed again during last week’s OTAs by fellow wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.

“I think it’s good to have a vet in the room. He could be one of those vets that’s just like, he doesn’t need to come, he’s experienced, stuff like that. But, it means a lot to me that he’s here and putting in the work, so that means a lot.”

Looking at the current receivers on the Patriots roster, there are a lot of young and unproven players set to take the field this season. Although that’s exactly what Mike Vrabel and Co. want for the team moving forward, there’s always a need for a solidified veteran to provide some insurance for an otherwise questionable group.

We saw what Bourne could do while working with a rookie Mac Jones in 2021, putting together the best season of his career by recording 55 receptions for 800 yards and five touchdowns. He became a security blanket for the quarterback, along with Jakobi Meyers and Hunter Henry, and that could easily be the case again with Maye this fall.

It’s invaluable to have a player like Bourne for a young quarterback to work with, especially when most of the other receivers are just as unproven as he is. Although there’s a lot of excitement about what they can all do, Bourne would be the reliable option for Maye to work with if all else fails, which is something the team should want for a second-year quarterback.

McDaniels was able to elevate his game to a new level, and they’re expected to pick up where they left off three years ago. If Bourne can replicate that kind of production, it would be foolish for the Patriots to entertain the idea of cutting or trading him.
