New England Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai suffered a serious-sounding injury at practice on Monday.
Tavai, according to multiple reporters who were in attendance, left the session after remaining down for an extended period during team drills. New England’s coaches reportedly shut the music off, while teammates kneeled around him and offered their support.
Jabrill Peppers and Mike Onwenu eventually helped him off the field, though the veteran linebacker put minimal pressure on his left leg.
The Patriots are in an interesting spot with their linebacking corps, as the new defense being installed requires less depth at that position compared to others. Tavai’s value comes in the fact that he can play both on and off the ball, with other members of that group like Jack Gibbens, Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss primarily spending their time in the middle of the defense.
