The Los Angeles Dodgers have their own All-Star pitching rotation and bullpen existing solely on the injured list.
Although this sounds like an exaggeration, it is the unfortunate truth of L.A. and its 15 pitchers on the IL. To make matters worse, a bulk of their hampered talent is on the 60-day IL after the most recent news of Tyler Glasnow being moved to the 60-day IL retroactive to April 28.
Dodgers fans might remember last season’s pitching woes and the challenges that affected Los Angeles until the final game of the World Series, but two major reinforcements who were brought in to address this issue are currently serving their own IL time.
Glasnow joins two-time Cy Young award winner Blake Snell on the 60-day IL as Nippon Professional Baseball phenom Roki Sasaki is currently sitting on the 15-day injured list. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes spoke on the process of getting these talents back onto the mound.
“It’s just being mindful and methodical about the foundational component and the buildup so that when they come back, the thought is when they come back they’re running through what we hope is a deep October run,” Gomes said.
Similar to the slow-play of Shohei Ohtani’s pitching progressions, the hope is to have these talented pitchers at their very best for the most important part of the season.
Snell could only muster a pair of starts before heading to the IL in early April with shoulder inflammation. Glasnow logged five starts before being shelved for shoulder inflammation of his own.
Sasaki made eight starts before a right shoulder impingement was the reason for his 15-day IL stint.
All three pitchers were part of the rotation to start the season and will be missed as they do their best to trend towards a recovery and try and help empty quite a crowded IL collection.
