The Los Angeles Dodgers have suffered quite a few blows to their pitching roster this season, but a former All-Star reliever hopes to bolster a bullpen in need.
Right-hander Alexis Diaz was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds last Tuesday and has been working to get his production back to his 2023 campaign that featured 37 saves and a 3.07 ERA. He is currently at L.A.’s spring training complex in Arizona to work with performance coaches and get back on track.
Diaz started to trend downwards in 2024, and things seemed to further decline in 2025. A lot of this can be attributed to his fastball velocity steadily dropping since 2022, as it averaged 95.7 mph to a present-day velocity of just 93 mph.
After a 3.99 ERA year with 28 saves last season, Diaz began this season with a 12.00 ERA through six appearances before he was sent to Triple-A. After 14 appearances and a 4.61 ERA in the minors, manager Dave Roberts believes that there is enough potential for the 28-year-old to once again succeed in The Show, without providing a timeline of when that may be.
“I don’t know the timeline,” Roberts said. “I think that is really contingent on how soon he takes to some of the things that we see and how that goes. But I wouldn’t expect it to be too long before he joins us.”
Diaz is the younger brother of Edwin Diaz, an All-Star closer for the New York Mets. The elder Diaz has a Reliever of the Year award in both the AL and NL.
Diaz has proven both genetically and, more importantly, on the diamond, that he has what it takes to succeed at an MLB level. For his own sake and his new team’s, he will look to once again thrive in The Show.
