Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons, at just 26 years old, has proven to be one of the best defenders in the NFL. As he enters the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, no team is arguing that point after witnessing four straight double-digit sack seasons to begin his career.
So obviously, anybody would want that on their team.
Parsons is, at this point, famously due for a contract extension that many expect to break records.
Famously … because each day that a contract is not signed seems to draw more and more speculation, usually about the potential for a trade.
Unfortunately for the clicks-hungry hopefuls, Parsons and the Cowboys are each committed for the long haul, having both publicly stated their desire to get a deal done
When? Your guess is as good as mine.
So in the meantime, outlets can’t help themselves in dreaming up hypothetical landing spots for Micah in a trade. The latest comes from Pro Football Network.
Even after blatantly admitting how Parsons and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have each expressed their intentions on re-signing, the site lays out five possible teams that would be interested in his services: the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.
Frankly, any team would gladly take Micah in a trade if he was available, so it’s not worth listing just five … but that is beside the point.
The common denominator in these claims is Jones’ timing on signing his star.
“Lack of urgency” and “time is running out” are just regurgitated buzz words trying to funnel readers into believing Jones’ patience is the cause of an ulterior motive.
He takes his time, but this is nothing new.
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb‘s contracts were an issue last season as well. Although both deals took until the season was a blink away, Jones made do what the plan was all along: sign his teams’ cornerstone stars to deservedly high-paying contracts.
Micah Parsons is next … and nothing so far has told us that Jerry will be operating any different than he always has.
Is it very efficient or cost effective? No – and certainly not at a position seeing a gold rush like defensive ends are – but that doesn’t mean a trade is in order.
The Cowboys still have plenty of time this offseason to sign Parsons, and mandatory meetings next week will be our next chance to see and hear something worth listening to about Micah’s situation.
Until any real evidence unearths itself, we must believe what we already know and understand that Jerry’s clock just ticks at a different pace than ours.
