Funkhouser was playing in Mexico after missing nearly three seasons due to injuries. In April, he joined the Guerreros de Oaxaca in the Mexican League. The right-hander went 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 24 strikeouts across 26 innings of work.
He has logged 70 career big league games with the Detroit Tigers, but hasn’t pitched in the Majors since the 2021 season.
In 2021, Funkhouser produced a 3.42 ERA with 63 strikeouts to 38 walks across 68.1 innings pitched. The performance marked a career-high in both ERA and total innings for the right-hander.
During Funkhouser’s rookie season in 2020, he posted a 7.27 ERA with 12 strikeouts across 17.1 innings pitched.
The 31-year-old was drafted by the Dodgers as the 35th overall pick in the 2015 draft, but the two parties never reached an agreement to sign.
Funkhouser has a career 4.20 ERA with 75 strikeouts and 1.506 WHIP across 85.2 innings pitched in the big leagues. The Texas Rangers was the most recent MLB team he was with. The right-hander signed a minor league contract with the team in January 2023, but elected free agency at the end of the season.
The Dodgers’ pitching injuries have depleted both the starting rotation and bullpen. And so, the hope is that the signing of Funkhouser provides some much-needed depth to the pitching staff.
Several pitchers have been called up from the minors in an effort to combat the Dodgers’ pitching woes, an indication Funkhouser could work his way up to the big leagues.
