It’s no secret the Los Angeles Dodgers need some help.
Injuries and a lack of production for some spots has caused the team to somewhat underachieve considering the mass expectations placed upon them in the offseason.
From a position player standpoint, the two who’ve struggled the most this year are Max Muncy and Michael Conforto.
Muncy is only hitting .211 with four homers, and has looked extremely shaky with his defense at third base.
Conforto has been even worse at the plate — hitting .172 with three homers.
The Dodgers did sign the veteran outfielder to a one-year deal worth $17 million. The team is giving him a longer runway to find his swing considering the contract and his track record. At the same time, what if it never comes? L.A. can’t wait on Conforto if his play continues to be this poor.
With Dalton Rushing playing behind Will Smith for the foreseeable future, there’s real rationale behind trading for a player that can toggle between third base and left field. The player fitting the bill right now in that capacity is Athletics outfielder/infielder Miguel Andujar.
Andujar, 30, first came up with the New York Yankees in 2017. His best year as a professional by far came in 2018 — where Andujar hit .297 while hitting 27 home runs, 47 doubles and driving in 92 runs. Due to injuries and inconsistency, he never came close to reaching those numbers again. He ended up with the Pittsburgh Pirates and eventually with the Athletics in 2023.
Andujar will be a free agent this upcoming offseason. He’s only making $3 million this year. His play thus far in 2025 has been spectacular to the point that he could be named an AL All-Star.
Entering Friday, Andujar is hitting .310 with a .757 OPS. He ranks above the 90th percentile in strikeout rate and whiff rate, and in the 95th percentile in arm strength.
In other words, he’d be an upgrade over Conforto (and likely Muncy) in virtually all categories. Andujar’s ability to put the ball in play is a skill all teams search for come postseason time.
Given his sudden explosion, the Athletics may be asking for a pretty penny in return. At the same time, he’s on an expiring deal and that would in theory limit what the team could get back in a possible deal.
Without a doubt, Andujar checks all the boxes on a player that can help the Dodgers win now and in October.
