Tyler Guyton on training, diet and outlook for 2025: ‘I have a lot to prove’ for Cowboys

FRISCO, Texas — Walk into the Dallas Cowboys’ facility and start asking about “Tyler” and you’ll get the justifiable response of “which one?”, considering there are four of them on the current roster and three of them on the offensive line alone but, this time, the questions were about and for second-year tackle Tyler Guyton — the 2024 first-round pick with a lot on his shoulders in 2025.

To look at the former Oklahoma standout is to immediately notice his reworked physique, having slimmed down noticeably over his rookie season while appearing a bit more formed muscularly.

This is in large part due to his wildly revamped diet. One could say he’s Ty’ing up loose ends.

I mean, one could.

“I think that I figured out a lot about what I need to do to take care of my body, to be able to play at a high level,” he said from OTAs. “Also, following the guys that have came before me and understanding that the routine is very important. I feel like I learned a lot.”

His is a regimen that includes ditching fried foods entirely, ratcheting up his intake of steak, fish and other proteins, and even stretching for one hour each day in an intensely hot garage (this is summer in Texas, after all). His dedication to leveling up in Year 2 has not gone unnoticed, either, evidenced in the fact he was praised highly by head coach Brian Schottenheimer — despite the incoming question having not been about Guyton at all.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Tyler Guyton. He’s having a terrific offseason. He’s working his ass off. He looks great.”

Schottenheimer went on to compare his potential turnaround in 2025 to that of one wideout in particular, having witnessed a 180-degree turn from a young Cowboys’ draft pick not long ago; but also noting how the addition of Klayton Adams as offensive coordinator and Conor Riley as offensive line coach have already begun benefitting Guyton.

“I think some of the new things that come from Klayton and Conor Riley really fit him,” Schottenheimer explained. “He hasn’t played offensive line a whole lot. Then he played right tackle for Oklahoma. Then he played left tackle [for the Cowboys], and it’s obviously a premier position, and he missed quite a lot of time in training camp.

“He has not missed a day [this offseason program]. He was one of the first guys back in the building. It reminds me a ton of Jalen Tolbert in Year 1. He was up and down as a high draft pick and didn’t have a great first year. J.T. was one of the first guys back in the building, and Tyler Guyton was one of the first guys back in the building. He understands just how important this year is for him, and not just for him, but for this football team.”

As for missing time in training camp due to injury, or any other reason one would rightfully attribute to his struggles as a rookie, don’t count Guyton in for accepting any of them.

Drenched in nearly as much accountability as he was in sweat during his Q&A session, Guyton owned his first-year downturns and isn’t hoping to forget them. Instead, he wants to use them as fuel.

“I mean, of course, there’s gonna be ebbs and flows, but I understand that it already happened and it’s in the past, and I’m gonna move forward from it and learn from my mistakes,” said the 23-year-old. “I have a lot to prove. I have a lot to work on. I didn’t do too good last season, and
I want to do better.

“I want to be the guy that can be depended on. … I just feel like I had a lot to prove and I needed to work on things, and getting in here earlier was the way I was gonna do it. … I’m not going to make any excuses. I just didn’t play as good as I needed to last year.

“You know I’m coming with a different attitude this year to become a better player.”

The loss of future Hall of Fame lineman Zack Martin looms as large for the Cowboys as the 2024 departure and eventual retirement of fellow future Hall of Fame lineman Tyron Smith, and Schottenheimer is looking to a youthful offensive line that features not one or two, but three first-round picks — inclusive of Tyler Smith and Tyler Booker — alongside a high-upside third-rounder in Cooper Beebe and a proven starter in Terence Steele to become the new Great Wall in Dallas.

Guyton wants to become what Smith is now, namely an All-Pro, with Booker hoping to be not far behind in that race and, for the Tyler headlining this article, it begins with a revised approach to how he attacks the offseason and training program.

That said, he’s passed the first test of 2025 with flying colors.
