The New England Patriots had one of the most aggressive offseasons in the league. They were able to add talent to both sides of the ball, making it a priority to improve the trenches.
On the defensive front, New England added Milton Williams, Harold Landry III, and Joshua Farmer. Williams and Barmore are expected to form a dynamic force on the inside, and Farmer could be someone who is a solid depth piece.
They also have Khyiris Tonga and Jaquelin Roy at nose tackle. Not everyone is going to make the 53-man roster, and Roy is a player who has his work cut out.
He came into the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, but only lasted one season there. New England signed him to their practice squad last September before moving him up to the active roster in October.
Roy ended up playing in six games (1 start) for the Pats. He posted 17 total tackles, three TFLs, two QB hits, and two sacks. According to PFF, Roy had a 57.7 overall grade (98th among 219 graded defensive linemen), 61.4 pass-rush grade (86th among 219 graded defensive linemen), and a 58.5 run-defense grade (72nd among 219 graded defensive linemen).
He wasn’t super productive in his outings, and with more competition added to the defensive line, it could be hard for the LSU product to stick around.
Guys like Williams and Baremore aren’t going anywhere due to their hefty price tags. They are expected to be some of the best players at their position, while they used a fourth-round pick on Farmer.
Add in that Roy didn’t play well in 2024, and it makes things more difficult for him to make the roster. Training camp will be big for Roy but the odds are he won’t be around for the 2025 season.
