Teoscar Hernandez Makes Dave Roberts Look Genius as Dodgers Manager Praises Star Outfielder

Dave Roberts speaks out on Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez pursuit

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez helped the team secure a series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday night.

Hernandez hit a three-run home run off of Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. It was the outfielder’s second game back from the injured list, but he has wasted no time making an impact for L.A.

Manager Dave Roberts heaped high praise for Hernandez, who he said is not afraid of those big moments.

“He relishes those spots. He’s not afraid to fail. He can manage his emotions,” said manager Dave Roberts. “He can kind of fend off a fastball. He can hit and slug or hit soft stuff/ secondary pitches. He can hit to all fields. And that’s what you have to do to be able to drive in runs. If you look at baseball, he’s really in the elite class of the ability to drive in runs.”

Hernandez missed two weeks on the IL with an adductor strain, and Roberts was very strategic about when he chose to put the outfielder in the lineup. On Tuesday, Hernandez did not play.

Roberts explained he kept the All-Star out of the lineup in the second game of the division series in order to preserve him for Wednesday’s finale with Burnes on the mound.

“I just felt like having him in there (Wednesday) and I just couldn’t guarantee that he could go three in a row,” Roberts said.

Roberts’ decision evidently paid off as Hernandez, on a 1-2 count, hit a slider off Burnes and sent the ball over the center field wall at Dodger Stadium. The rest of the L.A. lineup went 3-for-22 against Burnes.

The Dodgers are in the midst of a grueling upcoming schedule, which kicked off with the series against Arizona.

The Dodgers are set to face the New York Mets, Cleveland Guardians, and New York Yankees in the coming days, but it’s a relief to know the team has one of their best hitters back in the lineup.
