The Baltimore Orioles fired Brandon Hyde over the weekend. These former Orioles could take his place on the first step of the dugout.
The Baltimore Orioles have been ice-cold to begin this season, and that caused them to fire manager Brandon Hyde over the weekend. During Hyde’s tenure, the Orioles had three consecutive losing seasons followed by three consecutive winning seasons before a slow start this year landed him on the chopping block.
A fresh new wave of managers has landed in Major League Baseball in the past five years. The Orioles could certainly lean the way of their former players to take control of the team and lead them into the future.
These former Orioles might fit the mold of an MLB manager
One of the most prominent options the Orioles could bring back to the clubhouse is former center fielder Adam Jones. Jones officially retired from baseball as an Oriole in 2023 and joined Baltimore’s front office this season.
Jones is beloved by the Baltimore faithful, and with a great baseball mind and major league experience on the field, would bring forth the new age of manager into Camden Yards. He doesn’t have any major league coaching experience, but many of the young managers have little to no coaching experience and jump in following their playing days.
The next former Oriole that could find his way into Baltimore’s dugout is Jones’ former teammate, J.J. Hardy. Hardy has been a guest coach at spring training, working with the middle infielders along with the third ex-Oriole that should be on the list of potential candidates, Brian Roberts. The double-play duo has coaching experience working with the Orioles’ young core.
Hardy has been impressed by Jackson Holliday, and either he or Roberts would be a great asset to have around for the future star’s development. The duo has plenty of major league experience and could further develop the Orioles’ youth that has yet to break out, and those grinding in the minors.
Roberts, Hardy, and Jones are all Orioles greats and will be remembered by fans as such. In their new chapter on the other side of the game, the opportunity to manage the team that they poured their blood, sweat, and tears into for so many years would be a chance for them to capture something they were unable to on the diamond as players.
Hyde’s firing after back-to-back seasons of reaching the playoffs stems from the failure of this year and might not be all his fault. The Orioles must now look to the future and decide if interim manager Tony Mansolino is the right man for the job. Baltimore might not need to look far for its next manager, but the Orioles have some internal options that would bring a fresh new phase to the franchise.
