Report: Surprise AFC West Team Pegged as Ideal Spot for Jaire Alexander

The Green Bay Packers have done a great deal of work to improve their roster this offseason.

Despite their 11-6 record and second consecutive appearance in the NFL Playoffs, they were just 1-5 against their division and 0-6 against NFC rivals, the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles (which includes their loss in the Wild Card round).

Green Bay used their first three picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on offense, selecting two wide receivers and an offensive lineman.

It was not until the fourth round that they selected a pass rusher, and not until the seventh that they selected a cornerback, which many fans and analysts believed would be one of their biggest positions of need.

Of course, this is because of the unresolved situation the team has going on with two-time Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander.

At one point, it looked like Alexander was going to be a Packer for a very long time. However, after he signed a contract that made him, at the time, the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, he started down a path of frequent injuries.

Over the last four seasons, the two-time Second Team All-Pro has played in just 34 of a possible 68 regular season games. During the last two seasons, he has played just 14 of a possible 34.

Also during this time, Alexander and the Packers have seemingly been at odds on two occasions. The first was during the 2023 season when he made himself a team captain for a game against the Carolina Panthers (his hometown team) and nearly botched the coin toss.

This decision resulted in a one-game suspension, but both Green Bay and Alexander stated that had moved past the incident.

The second, and most recent, was during the 2024 season. After suffering a knee injury midseason, Alexander pulled himself out of a game against the Chicago Bears after 10 snaps and then never played again. In the interim, he was frequently a full participant in practices, but always scratched on game day. It came out that he and the team disagreed on how his injury should be treated.

In the end, he got knee surgery. After the Packers lost to the Eagles in the Playoffs, he told reporters that he was not sure that he was going to come back to Green Bay next year.

Alexander’s comments made many believe that he would be traded this offseason. But free agency came and went, and then the NFL Draft, and he has remained put. While the front office and coaches state that they are “working through it,” there remains a belief among fans that he still could return.

However, in the event that he does eventually get traded, Matt Bowen of ESPN believes the Los Angeles Chargers would be the best fit for him.

“If Alexander is available in a trade, he would be seen as an upgrade in Jesse Minter’s defensive system,” Bowen wrote. “The Chargers are zone heavy, playing both single-high Cover 3 and split-safety schemes. Alexander has the play instincts and foot quickness to match routes, and his transition speed allows him to make plays on the ball. Alexander has intercepted 12 passes and broken up 57 in his career.”

Indeed, the Chargers would be an ideal trade partner for Green Bay because Alexander would not be going to a division rival. Furthermore, he would be out of the conference altogether.

It remains to be seen whether or not the two sides will come to some kind of an agreement for the two-time Pro Bowler to return, but as the days click by, trade proposals and rumors will continue to abound.
