In a heartwarming moment that captured national attention, a service dog named Justin received his own honorary diploma alongside his owner, Grace Mariani, during Seton Hall University’s 2023 commencement ceremony. Grace, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and graduated magna cum laude, walked the stage at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, with Justin by her side—just as he had been throughout her college journey.
As Grace accepted her diploma, Seton Hall President Joseph Nyre surprised the crowd by also presenting a diploma to Justin. The auditorium erupted in cheers as the loyal golden retriever gently took the rolled certificate in his mouth, wagging his tail while the audience applauded and even barked in celebration. The touching moment, captured on video by the university, highlighted the incredible bond between a service animal and their handler, and served as a joyful reminder of the many forms support and partnership can take on the road to achievement.
