Packers Get Much-Needed Great News From The NFL

The Green Bay Packers received some welcomed news from the NFL, with reports that the salary cap is expected to rise even higher than originally anticipated ahead of the 2025 offseason.

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst walks on the field pre-game at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024.

Green Bay broke character last offseason, signing marquee free agents Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney to colossal contracts, with both having the kind of seasons where they are emerging among the premier players at their positions while looking at cornerstones for the Packers’ success in coming years.

If general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers hope to once again shop at the top of the market to continue building around quarterback Jordan Love and the young core of explosive weapons around him, the organization should have a bit more spending flexibility to work with.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport and Tom Peliserro, of the NFL Network, teams were advised that the cap could rise to as high as $265-$275 million for 2025 in the coming months.

How Much Salary Cap Space Are the Packers Projected to Have?

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is shown before their game against the Houston Texans Sunday, October 20, 2024 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Before the report of the cap’s likely increase, the Packers were expected to have upwards of $45 million in spending flexibility in the coming offseason.

However, according to Spotrac’s estimates, projecting the cap at roughly $273.3 million, the Packers’ cap space would balloon to $45 million.

If those projections hold true, Gutekunst and the Packers would rank 11th in cap space, which should be plenty of spending flexibility to decide how to address unrestricted free agents such as cornerbacks Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine, linebacker Eric Wilson, safety Zayne Anderson, and wide receiver Bo Melton, among others.

Needless to say, the Gutekunst and the Packers would have the ammunition to once again be big players this offseason, if that’s the path they choose to go down.
