Josh Jacobs scored three touchdowns, Christian Watson went over 100 receiving yards and Tucker Kraft caught a third-down touchdown, but one offensive weapon for the Green Bay Packers was notably and surprisingly quiet during Thursday night’s 34-31 loss to the Detroit Lions.
Jayden Reed, who leads the team in catches and receiving yards, saw just one target and didn’t have a touch while playing just 25 snaps.
Thursday night was Reed’s first regular season game without a catch in 29 career games.
The Packers offense was only on the field for 50 snaps, so opportunities were limited. And Matt LaFleur clearly saw an opportunity to play bigger packages (Ben Sims and John FitzPatrick played 24 total snaps) and run the ball right at the Lions’ injury-ravaged front, further limiting chances for a slot receiver.
But the Packers still called 27 passing plays, and Reed was on the field for only 18 of the 27. His lone target — in the first half — resulted in a drop on second down. Reed, who had a rushing attempt in his 10 of his 12 games, didn’t get a rushing opportunity.
The passing game went through Watson, who caught four passes for 114 yards, and both Tucker Kraft (three catches, 41 yards) and Dontayvion Wicks (four catches, 49 yards) were productive with their five respective targets. The Packers called 20 designed runs.
Reed averaged roughly five touches a game during his first 12 games of the season, but production has been limited as of late. While he has three touchdowns in the last four games, Reed hasn’t gone over 30 receiving yards in a game since Nov. 3. And he has only one rushing attempt gaining positive yards since Oct. 13.
The Packers are getting more production out of Watson, who is heating up, and Jacobs is obviously the centerpiece in the run game. But can Matt LaFleur find better ways of getting the ball to his explosive slot receiver down the stretch? Reed is too good and too important to get through any game with zero touches.
