Struggling Phillies Vet in Danger of Losing Job to Start May

San Francisco Giants v Philadelphia Phillies

It is growing increasingly impossible for Philadelphia Phillies fans to remain patient with outfielder Brandon Marsh. We are well over a month into the season, and the part-time starter is hitting .143 consistently, giving away outs in the first weeks of the season.

To be completely fair, Marsh did deal with an injury that limited the veteran’s playing time the last two weeks of April. The veteran has aided his case, going 3-for-7 at the plate since returning from the IL.

Still, this has been a continual weak spot that the Phillies cannot continue to ignore. In a star-studded National League East, the franchise must be careful how patient it remains with the veteran.

The regression goes back to the 2024 season when Marsh’s numbers took a clear dip after two productive seasons with the club. With this in mind, it might be time for the Phillies to consider turning the page on the veteran.

While the Phillies remain near the top of the payroll, the team has ignored some clear offensive concerns that could push the franchise over the top. When competing against the Goliath that is the Los Angeles Dodgers, you cannot afford to spare any expense. This mindset is how the team must view the current situation with Marsh.

If the outfielder cannot turn the early-season struggles around, it is time to go out and find an offensive upgrade. Several potential fits are expected to be available on the trade market, including Chicago White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. While the Phillies don’t necessarily have to spend at this level to improve, the opportunity is there.

Marsh is in his fourth season with the franchise, offering surprise production in 2023 after a hot start to his Philly tenure the previous season.

Last year was a clear step back, leading to the outfielder hitting .095 before his return from injury. It is a concern that the team must at least make note of as they attempt to take advantage of New York’s recent step back and Atlanta’s dismal start to the 2025 season. The club must look to take advantage of this as much as possible, and that could mean replacing Marsh.
