Matt LaFleur has experienced highs and lows throughout his six seasons as the Green Bay Packers head coach.

Beginning with three consecutive 13-win seasons and guiding the youngest roster in the NFL since the 1970s to the playoffs, LaFleur also faced postseason disappointments, including falling one game short of the Super Bowl in back-to-back years.

Still, one of the most challenging parts of this business is watching people lose their jobs, especially those you’ve grown close to.

It’s a harsh reality in the NFL, where relationships often take a backseat to the pressure to win.

Last year, LaFleur had to make the tough call to fire his close friend, defensive coordinator Joe Barry. He recently discussed the decision on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast.

“When you go through something together, especially something hard together, you form a bond with somebody, and then at some point that comes to an end for all players and for me, when I have to let go of coaches. Guys that have poured everything into it and for whatever reason it doesn’t work out.”

“It’s always the danger of hiring people that are close to you,” LaFleur continued. “I mean, well known, I let Joe Barry go who’s a very dear friend of mine. That was like one of the toughest conversations I’ve ever had with somebody. You can’t prepare for it. That’s why you just got to tell people the truth and whatever happens happens, but at least your truth, how you see it, at least you gotta be honest with people.”

LaFleur and Barry previously worked together under Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams before reuniting in Green Bay.

Barry spent three seasons as the Packers’ defensive coordinator but struggled to get the most out of a talented unit.

The defense routinely underperformed against the run and allowed quarterbacks like Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, and Jimmy Garoppolo to look far more effective than they typically were.

There were bright spots—notably solid outings against Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert—but the group lacked the consistency to deliver meaningful results.

In January 2025, the Packers appointed Jeff Hafley as defensive coordinator, and his impact was immediately apparent.

Meanwhile, Joe Barry took on the role of linebackers coach and run-game coordinator with the Miami Dolphins ahead of last season.
