Who had the worst Draft?
The rookies are already in town, and the veterans will soon join them, but Matt LaFleur’s latest comments on Jaire Alexander only add to the uncertainty over his Green Bay Packers future.
It once seemed a foregone conclusion that the Packers would release or trade their All-Pro cornerback, although recent updates have offered a glimmer of hope for a surprise return. LaFleur isn’t ready to commit to that and offered little when asked about Alexander’s status.
“To be honest with you, I don’t have many updates in regards to where we are in that whole situation,” LaFleur said at the Packers’ rookie minicamp. “I just know we’re trying to work through it.”
LaFleur confirmed that Alexander isn’t taking part in the voluntary workouts just yet. NFL insider Josina Anderson provided some more context.
“I’m told there already is an understanding in place between the Packers and CB Jaire Alexander to come to an agreement on his roster and contract situation first, prior to an arrival for the team’s offseason program, per league source,” writes Anderson.
Anderson adds that the Packers have had “exploratory trade talks” with other teams, while releasing Alexander remains an option.
Matt LaFleur’s ‘update’ only heightens the frustration over Jaire Alexander’s uncertain Packers future
The latest reports suggest that anything is on the table. Could the Packers trade Alexander? Cut him? Yes. Could they figure things out and bring him back on a revised contract? Also yes.
It would help to figure this out soon.
If Alexander departs, the Packers will likely need to add another cornerback, either via free agency or a trade. They would be left with a starting trio of Nate Hobbs, Keisean Nixon, and Carrington Valentine, which is fine, but who steps in if they lose a player to injury?
Second-year Javon Bullard can play in the slot, but the Packers lack experienced depth on the outside.
The current backups are rookies Micah Robinson, Jonathan Baldwin, and Tyron Herring, as well as Isaiah Dunn, Kamal Hadden, and Kalen King. They have a combined 114 defensive snaps in the NFL — all belonging to Dunn.
Take away Alexander, and the Packers desperately need to add another cornerback. It’s why the team needs to show more urgency to find a resolution.
Unfortunately, LaFleur’s answer didn’t seem to suggest we can expect an answer just yet.
