Injuries have plagued the Twins organization all season, with Royce Lewis, Matt Wallner and more missing significant time. To make matters worse, two top prospects are currently on the injured list.
Walker Jenkins not expected to play before the end of May after receiving cortisone shot for left ankle soreness
The Twins announced on Tuesday that Jenkins, MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 prospect and the Twins’ No. 1, has lingering left ankle soreness and is not expected to play before the end of May, according to MLB’s Matthew Leach.
Jenkins, who recently received a cortisone shot for his injury, hurt his ankle while working out during Spring Training but still made Double-A Wichita’s opening day roster, where he lasted two games before being placed on the injured list. It’s another tough break for Jenkins, who missed 82 games last season with a left hamstring injury he suffered in the home opener.
Jenkins, 20, has a career .299/.395/.467 slash line with nine home runs and 23 stolen bases in 491 minor league plate appearances.
If Jenkins, the 5th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, can stay healthy and the Twins need help for a playoff push late in the season, there’s a good chance the top prospect could find himself on the major league roster later this season. But most likely, he will be called up in 2026 or 2027.
Right-handed starting pitcher Charlee Soto lands on the injured list with right triceps soreness
The Twins also announced on Tuesday that Soto, the Twins’ No. 8 prospect, will be put on the injured list with right triceps soreness.
Soto, the 34th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has a 1.38 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 13 innings for High-A Cedar Rapids this year. Last season, he struggled for Single-A Fort Myers with a 5.23 ERA but still managed 87 strikeouts in 74 innings.
Soto, 19, is expected to reach the major leagues in 2027. He possesses a plus fastball that averages mid-90s and relies on a gyro-type slider and an above-average changeup as his secondary pitches.
