Packers’ Matt LaFleur on ‘beef’ with Bears’ new coach: ‘I don’t know Ben Johnson’

In Ben Johnson’s introductory press conference, the new Chicago Bears coach goaded rival Green Bay and Matt LaFleur.

“And to be quite frank with ya, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year,” Johnson said in January of his success with the Lions against the Packers.

For his part, LaFleur has deflected each chance to fight back, but that hasn’t slowed the questions about the rivalry, which has been lopsided, with Green Bay winning 11 of the past 13 games.

Asked in a recent episode of the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast, LaFleur cheekily dismissed questions about Johnson.

“I don’t know Ben Johnson,” LaFleur said. “Do I have beef? I don’t know Ben Johnson. I respect him as a football coach, he did a nice job (with the Lions). … I thought it was interesting. The press conference was interesting, but I don’t have beef with him. … I don’t get all into that stuff.”

While dismissing the question verbally, LaFleur’s mannerisms suggest he’s at the very least annoyed with the questions about Johnson, if not peeved with the initial comment.

The Bears becoming more than an NFC North doormat would bring added life to one of the best rivalries in the NFL. Until the first meeting between Johnson and LaFleur in 2025, the Green Bay coach will continue being asked about comments. Maybe after that tilt, LaFleur will be ready to fire back if the Packers come out on top.
