It is hard not to be thrilled with how the Dallas Cowboys drafted this year. While they didn’t address wide receiver on Day 3, that was probably the right cal
Instead, they added a dynamic running back in Texas’ Jaydon Blue, who ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the Combine.
Then, they traded up for Florida linebacker Shemar James before beefing up the trenches with Oregon right tackle Ajani Cornelius and UCLA nose tackle Jay Toia.
As all of these Day 3 selections have been made, the details of some recent Cowboys trades have either been finalized or taken a big step toward being finalized.
The Kaiir Elam trade is a prime example, though we won’t know the full details until the Bills pick in the seventh round next year.
In the meantime, the full details of Dallas’ Kenneth Murray are now official after the team double-dipped at running back with Clemson bruiser Phil Mafah at pick No. 239.
Full details of Kenneth Murray trade revealed after Cowboys’ draft RB Phil Mafah
At 6-1 and 234 pounds, Mafah is the definition of a bulldozer. He is a true downhill runner and is the perfect complement to Blue, who is a threat to take any touch to the house.
The former Tiger scoffs at arm tackles and won’t hesitate to run over defensive backs in the second level.
Let’s take a look at those full trade details.
Cowboys receive
- LB Kenneth Murray
- RB Phil Mafah
Titans receive
- RB Kalel Mullings
Coincidentally enough, Mullings and Mafah are very similar runners. Mullings is a former linebacker who made the switch to RB late in the 2022 season. Dane Brugler of The Athletic had Mullings No. 23 in his running back rankings, while Mafah checked in at No. 25.
Mullings is your textbook pile-mover in short-yardage situations. He has balanced feet for a bigger back and his size does not slow his momentum when he cuts.
The Cowboys were laughed at for trading draft capital for Murray. That was fair as Murray was one of the lowest-graded linebackers in football last season. Matt Eberflus will need to work his LB magic to right Murray’s flaws, but Dallas and Tennessee essentially got the same running back despite the Titans jumping up 55 slots thanks to the trade.
Seems like Dallas got the better of this one!
