Patriots fans are extremely familiar with Deatrich Wise Jr. and his play on the field. Ever since he was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, he has been a consummate professional and one of the best defensive linemen on the team, year in and year out.
He played in 122 games for the organization and has been an exemplary team leader through thick and thin. He was a big part of the Super Bowl championship in his second year in the league and is now providing valuable mentorship to the young and rebuilding Patriots.
Even more impressive than his on-field resume, however, is what Wise has been doing outside of football. On Thursday, the 30-year-old was recognized for his community service when he was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

Wise has been heavily involved with the Wise Up Foundation, providing educational opportunities, supporting underserved student-athletes, and honoring veterans.
He hosts annual events for the community, including Hot Meals for Vets, a Christmas feast for veterans, the Unsigned Senior Camp, and the Annual Block Party in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston.
“My father always told me that community service is the price you pay for your time here on earth. Our family has always been active in the community and eager to help others. I hope acts of kindness inspire more acts of kindness. That’s really what we aim to achieve through our Wise Up Foundation, leaving this world better than we arrived to it by positively impacting the lives of others in hopes that they will do the same in order to make our communities and world stronger as a result.”

Wise’s contract is up with the New England Patriots after this season. Considering his age and where the Patriots are as an organization, this may be the last five games for the veteran defender in a Pats uniform.
Kudos to the organization for recognizing a team captain and community leader for his efforts in making the world a better place.
