Luke Keaschall suffers fractured right forearm in Twins’ 11-4 win against the Angels
After Minnesota’s thrashing of the Angels on Friday, The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reported that second baseman/designated hitter Luke Keaschall, who underwent Tommy John surgery in August, suffered a broken right forearm after getting hit with an 86.8 mph sinker from starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks in the bottom of the first inning.
Keaschall, who served as the designated hitter in the game, remained on the base paths but was taken out before his next at-bat by Twins manager Rocco Baldelli in favor of Mickey Gasper, who collected his first major league extra-base hit and RBI Friday.
In 26 plate appearances since his major league debut against the Atlanta Braves on April 18, Keaschall, the Twins’ No. 3 prospect according to Major League Baseball, has posted a .368/.538/.526 slash line with five stolen bases.
Keaschall, who is the 57th best prospect in the league per MLB, hit .303/.420/.483 with 15 home runs in 103 games at the Double-A and Triple-A levels last year while dealing with a torn elbow ligament before his surgery in August.
Many Twins fans probably feel numb at hearing the news of an impact player suffering a devastating injury at this point. Minnesota has already dealt with crucial injuries to key players such as Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, Pablo Lopez, Willi Castro and Matt Wallner this year.
Twin acquiring Kody Clemens from Phillies
Almost immediately after the Keaschall news, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported the Twins are acquiring infielder/outfielder Kody Clemens, 28, from the Philadelphia Phillies.
On Wednesday, the Phillies announced they DFA’d Clemens, who is hitless in six at-bats this season.
Since joining Philadelphia via a trade from the Detroit Tigers in 2023, Clemens, son of former MVP pitcher Roger Clemens, posted a .220/.265/.394 slash line in 275 plate appearances.
Twins set to play Angels on Saturday
Game 2 of the three-game set between the Twins and Angels is set to begin at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday. Simeon Woods Richardson is scheduled to make the start on the mound for the Twins, with lefty Yusei Kikuchi slated to start for Los Angeles.
