LATEST UPDATE: Cowboys May Hit the Jackpot with Perfect WR for Dak Prescott in Final Moments

New Orleans Saints v Dallas Cowboys

The NFL Draft is less than 48 hours away and there is a lot of chum in the water in terms of who the Dallas Cowboys could select with the No. 12 overall pick.

While they are still expected to take a wide receiver, a lot of new names have entered the mix at the eleventh hour.

Some of those players are of the offensive line variety, including North Dakota State guard Gray Zabel, Alabama guard Tyler Booker, and Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons.

Most Cowboys fans want a new WR for Dak Prescott in the first round. One of Tetairoa McMillan or Matthew Golden should be available at No. 12.

But what if the opportunity emerged to trade for an established stud who is just entering his prime and is a great fit next to CeeDee Lamb?

Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, some people in the league think the Detroit Lions could trade wide receiver Jameson Williams.

Lions WR Jameson Williams would be a dream fit with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott

A first-round pick in 2022, Williams is entering his fourth season. The Lions have until May 1 to decide if they will pick up his fifth-year option.

With significant money committed to its offense, Detroit may be mulling whether it wants to pay the former Alabama star.

While Williams isn’t a top-drawer wideout, he is as explosive as any WR in the league and only turned 24 in March.

He didn’t play much as a rookie after tearing his ACL late in his final season at Alabama and served a four-game suspension in 2023 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.

Williams was then hit with a two-game ban last season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy, but he played in every other game in the regular season and produced at a high level, catching 58 of 91 targets for 1,001 yards and seven scores.

He ranked top five at the position in yards per catch (17.3) and yards after the catch per reception (8.4), per PFF.

Williams’ ability to stretch the field is an ideal fit with Lamb, who is an impossible cover in the first and second levels. There isn’t a cornerback in the league who can contend with Williams’ speed. He played 317 snaps out wide compared to 176 in the slot last season. That would allow Lamb to play most of his snaps in the slot, where he’s arguably the best in the business.

The Cowboys should proceed with caution due to Williams’ off-field issues. The Lions’ asking price, assuming they shop the speedster, will be the deciding factor here as well, but he moves the needle for this offense much more than McMillan and Golden.
