Some people are built for the big stage, and others aren’t, and the Dallas Cowboys, one can argue, is the biggest of stages in professional sports.
Leading one of the most well-known and high-profile sporting organizations on the planet isn’t for the faint-hearted, but Brian Schottenheimer is ready for all the smoke.
Having bided his time over the course of roughly 25 years in the NFL as a position coach to then be an offensive coordinator, now he is “the” guy steering the ship.
And this isn’t just any old ship. It’s the Cowboys.
But does the gravity of his position, and what it means to be the face of the Cowboys, ever come across his mind?
“Usually, I’m so busy, it pops up at different times,” Schottenheimer said. “But I’m ready for it, always have been, way more ready for it now than I was probably when I was 32. Had some opportunities, but I think the biggest thing for me would be it’s way more clear to me now what I want to do, how I want to do it, with a special culture about winning, about doing it with the right type of people.”
It has been a whirlwind time for Brian as he adjusts to being the top dog in the franchise, and his coaching staff has now been finalized with a key emphasis on building the right kind of culture, and offensively, where he will have the most pull, will be a run-first unit.
But the job he is undertaking isn’t a small one, and with a fanbase thirsty for success having been starved of it for years, Brian won’t get a breaking-in period despite being a first-time head coach.
Here comes the NFL Draft. It’s a milepost.
He’s got skins on the wall in the NFL, and now that he’s the captain of his own ship, he’s ready for the opportunity.
