Not many people could have predicted the 7-12 start that the Minnesota Twins have gotten off to.
In a division that had half of the playoff teams from the American League last season, that will be a tough hole to climb out of.
A bright spot on the Twins has been right-hander Pablo Lopez, who is off to an excellent start in his third seasons with Minnesota.
Through three starts, Lopez has an ERA of 1.62 with 14 strikeouts across 16 2/3 innings. Because of his experience in the big leagues, Lopez will be a hot commodity at this season’s trade deadline if the Twins continue to struggle.
If Lopez is moved, here are three teams that would benefit greatly from his addition to their rotation.
San Francisco Giants San Francisco has gotten off to a blistering hot start this season with a 13-6 record.
The Giants are one of four teams in the NL West that would currently be in the postseason, and it looks as if that will be the case throughout the season.
The current Nos. 3, 4 and 5 for San Francisco are Justin Verlander. Jordan Hicks and Landon Roupp, respectively. There could be an argument made for Verlander, but Lopez would no doubt an upgrade over Hicks and Roupp.
If the Giants are still in the hunt in mid-July, they should be one of the most aggressive teams in the starting pitching market.
Chicago Cubs Had left-hander Justin Steele not suffered a season-ending injury, the Cubs would not have made this list, but here they are.
While they aren’t in desperate need for pitching, a quality arm certainly wouldn’t hurt.
Handing the ball to Lopez in an elimination game would be a much better option than handing it to Ben Brown or Colin Rea.
While it isn’t an immediate need, testing the market and seeing what it would potentially take to snag Lopez from Minnesota would not be a bad idea for Chicago’s front office.
New York Yankees Much like Chicago, New York would not have made the list without the season-ending injury to its ace Gerrit Cole. That left a huge hole in the rotation for the Yankees and Lopez would be an excellent addition.
New York has two power left-handed arms in Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, and Lopez could be the buffer between the two.
While the Yankees still have Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil, it’s hard to trust the two to be available due to their injury history.
Lopez has made 32 starts in each of the last three seasons and would give manager Aaron Boone a reliable arm for not only the regular season but the postseason as well.
