Rob Manfred Sends Message to Dodgers on Lowering Cost for Fans

Rob Manfred defends Dodgers but acknowledges possibility of MLB salary cap

Few Los Angeles Dodgers fans could complain about the team’s recent run, but success has a price.

The defending World Series champions, 2020 champions, and winners of 11 of the last 12 National League West crowns are in the midst of their most dominant stretch of baseball since the mid-1950s.

However, even with an all-star quality roster and superstars like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman donning Dodger blue, fans have the right to be upset with increasing ticket prices.

A Vivid Seats report from spring training listed the average Los Angeles ticket at $181, over $40 more than the second-highest. Another study estimated that the average family of four will spend nearly $400 on some of the cheapest available tickets, parking, two beers, two sodas, and four hot dogs. That figure is nearly double the league average.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred suggested cost-effective alternatives for Dodgers fans in an LA Times article:

“One of the leaders in terms of thinking about affordability has been the other Los Angeles team,” Manfred said.

While the Los Angeles Angels are certainly a more money-friendly option, Manfred’s comments are a bit tone deaf. A majority of the people in Los Angeles support the Dodgers for good reason, as the Angels have made just one postseason appearance (a 2014 American League Divisional Series loss) since their last ALCS berth in 2009.

They have also largely wasted the prime years of one of baseball’s greatest outfielders ever, Mike Trout. To make matters worse, Ohtani used to call Anaheim home before flipping his talents to Los Angeles.

Another element is park accessibility. Dodger Stadium is located about two miles from downtown LA, whereas the Angels play in Anaheim, nearly 30 miles away.

Manfred is going to have a hard time saying anything bad about the Dodgers, considering their national and global appeal, but suggesting fans look elsewhere is not a viable resolution.
