José Miranda was demoted to Triple-A St. Paul in favor of Brooks Lee after a baserunning mistake in the Twins’ 4-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers last Saturday. To make matters worse for the Twins infielder, he landed on the injured list on Tuesday after hurting his left hand while shopping at Target.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, a case of water slipped from Miranda’s grip on Monday, and he felt pain in his left hand as he re-grabbed it.
In 12 games with the Twins this season, Miranda went 6-for-36 with five singles, one home run and zero walks in 36 at-bats. Miranda had the best year of his major league career in 2024, hitting .284/.322/.441 (112 OPS+) with 1.7 bWAR in 121 games.
Miranda’s injury adds to a long list of Twins who are currently hurt. Carlos Correa, who holds a .164/.227/.246 (36 OPS+) slash line this season, exited the Twins’ game against the Mets last Tuesday due to soreness in his left wrist. Despite the soreness, he entered Wednesday’s matchup with New York off the bench as a defensive replacement.
However, Correa only entered the contest because Willi Castro departed with right oblique tightness.
Additionally, the Twins’ best hitter this season, Matt Wallner, was placed on the 10-day IL with left hamstring tightness on Wednesday after leaving Tuesday’s game in pain.
Twins trade for journeyman infielder after losing best hitter to injury
Rather than looking to the minor leagues to replace Wallner’s spot on the roster, President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey opted for a trade.
The Twins acquired journeyman infielder Jonah Bride, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday, from the Miami Marlins for cash considerations on Wednesday.
Bride, 29, has just four hits in 45-at bats this season. However, he put up a 120 OPS+ in 272 plate appearances last year for Miami.
Bride started his major league career with the Oakland Athletics in 2022. In two seasons with the A’s, the infielder had -0.4 bWAR across 287 plate appearances before getting traded to the Marlins on Feb. 7, 2024.
The Twins’ next game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CST on Friday against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
