FRISCO – Tyron Smith played with a litany of wildly successful teammates during his Dallas Cowboys career.
*Offensive lineman Zack Martin, bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
*Tight end Jason Witten, ditto.
*Defensive end DeMarcus Ware, already enshrined in Canton.
*Running backs Ezekiel Elliott and DeMarco Murray, who won a combined three NFL rushing titles.
*Receiver Dez Bryant, Top 5 in franchise history in catches and yards and the career leader in touchdowns.
*Quarterback Tony Romo, the team’s all-time passing leader.
*Quarterback Dak Prescott, who will soon overtake Romo and finished second in NFL MVP voting in 2023.
No slouch himself, Smith was the best left tackle in football for a decade has a spot reserved in both the Ring of Honor in Arlington and the hallowed halls of Canton.
Add up all that individual star power that graced the Cowboys’ roster from 2011-23 and you get … zilch. Inexplicably, Dallas parlayed all the superlatives into as little as possible. During Smith’s career, which officially ended with a retirement press conference Wednesday afternoon at The Star, the Cowboys never won two playoff games in the same season and never even sniffed an NFC Championship Game much less a Super Bowl.
Vice president Stephen Jones recently scoffed at critics who label the Cowboys’ almost 30-year championship void as a “drought.” But owner Jerry Jones admitted the harsh truth sitting next to Smith.
“It is a tragedy,” Jerry said, “that we didn’t win a Super Bowl.”
For his 13 elite seasons and a career that puts him in the Top 5 best offensive linemen in franchise history, Smith got a nice send-off. A video tribute. A crystal football. And he’ll back at AT&T Stadium sooner than later to have his name etched in mortality in the Ring of Honor.
This season will mark the first time since 2011 the Cowboys won’t line up either Smith or Martin along the offensive line. The two played 10 seasons together, combining for 17 Pro Bowls, 10 All-Pros, 333 starts and … relatively no team success.
It’s the end of an era. And also an error.
