The Dallas Cowboys have gone more than one generation since they had a truly successful season encapsulated by a Super Bowl victory. More than 30 years have elapsed since Jerry Jones was handed the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
When it comes to selling tickets, merchandise and jerseys the Cowboys reign supreme. However, they do not give trophies for the amount of money made. If they did, Jones would a whole floor of trophy cases.
Former Cowboys great Emmitt Smith said it “bugs his heart” that the Cowboys have not won anything since then. He said the fact 30 years have gone by since their last Super Bowl win is a “crying shame.”
“That part bugs me. It bugs me because, in my heart, I truly believe our organization should be contending for an NFC Championship game and even a Super Bowl at least once or twice a decade because every team recycles every decade,” Smith said via The Dallas Morning News. “For us not to be there over the last 30 years is a crying shame.”
Smith maintains the position the Cowboys are a good young team with a solid nucleus players should want to be a part of. He feels the best is still yet to come and it won’t be that long before the Cowboys are at the top of the mountain once again.
“I look at us and I say, when you draft somebody, they already got to know what’s expected. They already have to know that there comes a long line of historians and history that comes along with it that you have to embrace,” Smith said. “You just cannot ignore it. And you have to figure out, what can I do to leave my mark on the game? And the game is bigger than me. And what do I need to do to help my teammates so they understand what’s important.”
Smith hopes the Cowboys figure it out soon. He believes 30 years is too long to wait for Jones to hoist the Lombardi once again.
