With players back in Foxborough for the start of the offseason program, Mike Vrabel laid out four rules for New England Patriots players.
At a team meeting earlier this week, Vrabel set expectations for players, giving them four rules to follow while they’re are the facility. (You can check out the clip here.)
- Treat the team and staff with respect
- Take hoods down on sweatshirts when you’re in a meeting.
- Be on time.
- Put cell phones away during meetings.
The biggest point of emphasis was that first rule.
“The training staff, the equipment staff, the kitchen staff. … They are here to help you do your job,” Vrabel said. “They aren’t here to be your valet, to be your housekeeper, to be your maid, to be your butler. We’re going to treat these people with the utmost respect.”
Vrabel said he’s fine with players getting worked up with him and cussing him out. But the team staff? They’re to be treated with respect.
Some of the other rules come with caveats. Vrabel acknowledged that it may be the style for some guys to leave their hoods up. He only asks them to bring them down when they’re in a meeting.
As for being on time, it looks like the new coach doesn’t have Bill Belichick’s draconian “zero tolerance” policy for tardiness. If a player is going to be late, he wants them to call the coaches and communicate the issue.
Now, if that happens multiple times. Then it’s a different issue.
When it comes to cell phone use, Vrabel wants players to avoid staying glued to them in meetings or in the weight room.
“You don’t need to do a set and then check your cell phone, do a set and then check your cell phone. Just leave the cell phones out of the (weight) room,” Vrabel said.
