Joe Milton Already Ruffling Feathers After Patriots Trade

Jan 5, 2025; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III (19) runs the ball for a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in the first quarter at Gillette Stadium.

Last week, the New England Patriots surprisingly traded second-year quarterback Joe Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2025 fifth round.

Patriots fans weren’t pleased with the return the team got in return for Milton. However, the young quarterback reportedly “fancied himself a starter” and wanted to go somewhere he could have a legitimate starting opportunity.

That said, the Cowboys aren’t exactly in need of a new starting quarterback, as they have Dak Prescott under contract until 2028. He will become a free agent in 2029. However, the Cowboys needed a backup after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens, making Milton the next best option.

On Thursday, it was revealed on Twitter/X that Milton would be wearing Rush’s old number with the Cowboys (No. 10). Last season with the Patriots, the former Tennessee Volunteers standout wore No. 19, which is not the most aesthetically pleasing number for a quarterback or many offensive players.

Coincidentally, Trey Lance wore No. 19 with the Cowboys over the last two years.

On social media, some Cowboys fans were happy to see that Milton won’t be wearing No. 19, while others wished that he didn’t get it, given that Rush had it for many years.

Meanwhile, another Cowboys fan pointed out that if the team drafts a rookie wide receiver, he won’t have that number, messing up the aura. At the end of the day, it’s just a jersey number, but you can see why some Dallas fans are cool with the change while others are not.

Nonetheless, Cowboys fans hope Milton can make some exciting plays in Rush’s number when called upon this season after an eye-opening performance in the Patriots’ regular season finale last season. If he can’t do that, Cowboys fans might be calling for Rush to come back. Pats fans will watch how Milton does, as his and Drake Maye’s careers are linked.
