Rob Thomson on Alec Bohm: ‘I’m not going to pull the chute on him yet’

Phillies manager Rob Thomson hinted after Wednesday’s game that he was ready to drop Alec Bohm in the batting order. When asked by NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman if he is considering hitting Nick Castellanos, who is on a hot streak, higher in the lineup, Thomson smiled and said, “We’ll see tomorrow.”

Lo and behold, Castellanos is batting cleanup behind Bryce Harper in Thursday’s finale against the Atlanta Braves. Bohm, who is batting .178 with a .396 OPS on the year, drops to seventh. J.T. Realmuto is ahead of Bohm at sixth. As Matt Gelb of The Athletic noted, it is the lowest Bohm has batted in the Phillies lineup since July 28, 2023.

It’s been a rough stretch for Bohm. He struck out four times on Wednesday. His last extra-base hit came on Opening Day. It appears his slow start is wearing on him, judging by his body language after making outs.

At this time last year, Bohm was on an all-time heater. He entered the month of May with a 1.036 OPS in 128 plate appearances. The conversation centered around Bohm’s ascent to superstardom.

Now, many are wondering when Bohm will snap out of it. It’s his first continuous 10-game stretch with an OPS below .400 since April 2023. Despite the struggles, Thomson is adamant about keeping him in the lineup.

“He’s thinking about it, you know,” Thomson told reporters Wednesday night. “He’ll get out of it. I mean, this guy was the All-Star third baseman last year in the National League. I’m not going to pull the chute on him yet, despite what everybody says.”

Here is the lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Braves in Atlanta. Jesús Luzardo is making his third start of the season. He will be opposed by right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach.
