Proposing 4 Potential Yankees Trades To Push New York Over Top

The New York Yankees need to make a few moves this season if they want to compete for the World Series at the same level they did last season. The Bronx Bombers made quite a few offseason additions, but the loss of Gerrit Cole for the season has haunted them. New York doesn’t have an adequate replacement for Cole yet, but it could certainly find one on the trade block.

Beyond that, the Yankees need to find upgrades up and down the roster. Let’s dive into four potential trades the Yankees could swing to take their roster over the top. It’s important to note these four trade proposals aren’t meant to happen in the same scenario. The Yankees don’t have a deep enough farm system to acquire too many stars at this point.

Trade proposal 1: Yankees land a new ace Yankees receive RHP Sandy Alcántara Marlins receive OF Spencer Jones, RHP Ben Hess, SS/2B Roderick Arias, LHP Brock Selvidge This proposal sees the Yankees land the right-handed pitcher they need to add to the starting rotation.

Sandy Alcántara is going to be the most sought-after player on the trade market this season. He has multiple years of affordable team control left on his contract as well as Cy Young potential. A trade package of four top-10 prospects might seem like a lot, but it’s the price to pay to land a controllable ace like Alcántara.

Yankees receive 3B Nolan Arenado, RHP Ryan Helsley, RHP Miles Mikolas, $25 million Cardinals receive: RHP Bryce Cunningham, SS/2B Roderick Arias, RHP Cam Schlitter This trade is a bit more complicated. If the Yankees can convince St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado to clear a trade to the Bronx, he would be the ideal third base solution.

Adding Ryan Helsley to the trade would be huge for New York. The Yankees have seen some early-season struggles from offseason addition Devin Williams. Helsley would be the main reason this trade is so expensive for New York, but the Yankees would also land Miles Mikolas as a salary dump for St. Louis. The Yankees would release Mikolas in this scenario, with the $25 million being used to help pay for Mikolas’ and Arenado’s contracts.

Trade proposal 3: Yankees reunite with star ace Yankees receive RHP Michael King, INF Luis Arráez Padres receive: OF Spencer Jones, RHP Ben Hess, RHP Cade Smith If the Yankees don’t want to spend the prospect capital it would take to land Alcántara, they could opt for a reunion with Michael King. King has top-of-the-rotation potential, while the Yankees could also afford to re-sign him in the offseason.

As an addition to this trade, the Yankees would land infielder Luis Arráez as well. Arráez would likely play second base while Jazz Chisholm Jr. slots back in at third base. Adding such a good contact hitter at the top of the lineup would help set the table for Aaron Judge in a big way.

Trade proposal 4: Yankees swap two prospects for a former top prospect Yankees receive: RHP Bobby Miller Dodgers receive: OF Everson Pereira, LHP Brock Selvidge The last trade on this list is a bit of a lottery ticket idea. Right now, the Yankees are trotting out Carlos Carrasco in their starting rotation. New York could take a shot on a low-risk, high-reward former top prospect from the Los Angeles Dodgers: Bobby Miller. Miller doesn’t have a clear path to the big leagues with Los Angeles, but he could be a starter in New York. The Dodgers are opting for other top prospects over him as they battle injuries right now. The Yankees could afford to part ways with two prospects to land a guy like Miller.
