The New England Patriots represent the third team for Stefon Diggs in as many years.
And with that, comes a new jersey number for the veteran wide receiver for the third season in a row.
After Diggs said he wouldn’t pull rank and pluck No. 1, which he wore last season with the Houston Texans, away from Ja’Lynn Polk, Diggs landed on No. 8 — the No. 14, which he wore with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, was already taken by Robert Spillane. Diggs unveiled how donning the number in his Patriots uniform will look with a social media post.
Diggs referenced the Bible for the reason why he chose No. 8, which became available after the Patriots released Ja’Whaun Bentley. The No. 8 symbolizes new beginnings in the Bible as Diggs is undergoing a new chapter of his career with the Patriots.

The 31-year-old wideout signed a three-year, $69 million deal to join the Patriots at the end of March. He is coming off a torn ACL and it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to suit up for New England.
Diggs was on track for his seventh straight 1,000-yard receiving season in 2024 before sustaining the significant injury. When he is healthy enough to return to the field, he’ll slot in as the No. 1 receiver in the Patriots offense and will have plenty to prove since his free-agent market felt notably light.
And if Diggs can return to form wearing the No. 8, perhaps it will become his new lucky number.
