Remember all those blogs you read about the Packers taking Michael Golden or Emeka Egbuka? And how for the first time in nearly a generation, they were going to probably roll the dice on drafting a wide receiver in the first round?
Forget it all. It’s not happening. Why stop a 20-year streak now? The bit’s just getting funny!
And if you don’t believe me, take Mel Kiper’s word for it. ESPN’s Draft guru dropped another mock draft on Tuesday morning – this one is only the first two rounds – and those who hit CRTL+F to figure out which WR the Packers were going to shock the world with suddenly found themselves in a real predicament: they have to start watching OLB tape now. (To be clear, you absolutely do not have to watch a minute of tape. You’ll be fine.)
Mel Kiper doesn’t think the Packers are taking a WR *or* a CB in the 1st round of NFL Draft
Packers select: Mykel Williams, OLB, Georgia
“The Packers had 45 sacks last season (tied for eighth), but that’s a little misleading. They were really good at converting pressure into sacks, but they got pressure only 29.8% of the time (22nd). Williams was hindered by an ankle injury in 2024, which kept him to five sacks over 12 games. But he has the explosive traits to be an extremely effective edge rusher. Other spots of interest would be receiver and cornerback, so expect Green Bay to take a look at guys like Emeka Egbuka or Kentucky corner Maxwell Hairston, too.”
Sadly, there isn’t actually that much controversy here. Believe me, I wanted it too. But not only is Williams a stud – he’s spent most of the pre-draft process hovering somewhere in the top-15 picks in most drafts – but he’d also fill a major spot of need on the Packers’ roster.
If they can’t get Maxx Crosby, I guess this is the next best thing? That’s what I’m telling myself.
The injury concerns are real – he himself admitted that he played all of last season at “less than 60%” – but his talent is undeniable.
So maybe Brian Gutekunst doesn’t land the WR of your dreams, but there are worse consolation prizes than a prospect who was, at times last year, a consensus top-5 pick. But, you know, a wide receiver wouldn’t hurt either.
