Chadwick Tromp outrighted to Triple-A, elects free agency

Catcher Chadwick Tromp, who was designed for assignment on April 6 by the Atlanta Braves when they activated catcher Sean Murphy from the 10-day injured list, has elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Tromp, who started two games for Atlanta this season, was expected to be the team’s back-up catcher to Murphy coming into the 2025 season. Murphy’s fractured rib suffered when being hit by a pitch during Spring Training opened the door for Atlanta’s top prospect, catcher Drake Baldwin, to make the Opening Day big league roster.

Baldwin has played well behind the plate and has produced good plate appearances including just-missing three home runs, leading the team to opt to keep Baldwin in Atlanta spelling the end of Tromp’s run in Atlanta.

Tromp, who joined the Braves organization late in the 2021 season, has appeared with the big league team in each season since. He debuted with the San Francisco Giants in 2020 and has appeared in 61 career games, 28 of which came with the Braves.

Tromp, 30, has had limited opportunities in the big leagues during his career, but hit well at Triple-A last season. The Braves added catcher Jason Delay last week via trade and also have veteran MLB backstops Sandy Leon and James McCann at Triple-A.

Tromp could end up back with the organization – as relief pitcher Jesse Chavez did after being DFA’s earlier this season, but Tromp may seek an opportunity elsewhere.
