Breaking: Dak Prescott weighs in on Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy’s fight for a contract extension

Mike McCarthy has coached Prescott since 2020 when he took the Dallas coaching gig.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been in the hot seat for almost half of the regular season. There are now only five games left, and the Cowboys feel that they have some traction heading into January.

The Cowboys have been nothing short of dysfunctional this season, but after a Thanksgiving Day win over the New York Giants, they are now 5-7. Their next two games are against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Carolina Panthers—two very winnable games.

After that, it gets more complex. They take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then play back-to-back divisional games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that he doesn’t plan on making a coaching change anytime soon, but we’ve seen him walk back some statements before. McCarthy could be coaching for a new contract in December.

One guy who believes he deserves to stick around is Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Prescott can’t make an impact on the field as he is now done for the remainder of the 2024 season with a hamstring tear. So he made one off of it this week when he sat down with Yahoo Sports via a Zoom call this week.

The Cowboys QB was excited back in 2020 when it was announced McCarthy was coming to Dallas, and he hopes they keep him around longer.

“Your coach seems like he’s playing on his last contract, and I’m almost feeling helpless like I can’t help him in this situation, especially a guy you believe in so much and you believe in being your head coach,” Prescott told Yahoo Sports. “Control what I can control, help and support Mike to every extent that I can.”

When Prescott was asked about Jones saying that it’s not crazy for McCarthy to return next season, he said, “I believe in him wholeheartedly. I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all, obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team with more influence.

‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it.”

Let us not forget that McCarthy is the Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Green Bay Packers and has gotten the Cowboys into the postseason for three straight years.

Dallas always has drama, which can mean good and bad things can happen. Right now, the Cowboys have a 4% chance of making the playoffs; those odds are a lot better than how things looked a month ago.
