The New England Patriots had two potential starting quarterbacks on their roster.
However, they were fully committed to Drake Maye, and as such, it only made sense that they moved on from their other potential candidate.
Also, it’s not like Joe Milton III wanted to be there anymore.
According to a report by Patriots beat writer Karen Guregian, Milton thought he should be the starter, and he felt like he wasn’t given a legitimate chance to compete for the starting job (via Savage Sports):
“Based on intel gathered from sources during the week, Milton fancied himself a starter. He didn’t see himself being given a legitimate chance to compete with Drake Maye,” she wrote. “He also believed he was good enough to give Maye a run, if not overtake him for the top job.”

Milton looked very promising in limited snaps in the preseason and the regular-season finale, and other teams clearly agreed that he could potentially be a starter.
Then again, the Patriots used a first-round pick to get Maye, and they were never going to give him as many opportunities to prove his worth with Maye there.
Now, he has a prime opportunity to put his money where his mouth is and overtake a proven veteran for the QB1 job.
There are plenty of reasons to doubt Dak Prescott, especially now that he’s coming off yet another season-ending injury.
The Dallas Cowboys fared much better with Cooper Rush at quarterback, and Jerry Jones already tried to get Prescott a young replacement in Trey Lance.
Even if the Cowboys continue to roll with a healthy Prescott to start the season, they should also give Milton an extensive look and determine whether he can legitimately be their starting quarterback at one point in the future.
