The Patriots’ hopes of drafting Travis Hunter might have taken a hit.
Colorado held its pro day Friday, and all eyes were on Shedeur Sanders and Hunter.
The two-way star ran routes to show his capability of playing cornerback and wide receiver in the NFL. That two-way ability would fit well with New England’s rebuild, but he needs to fall to No. 4 for that to become a reality.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe dropped bad news for Patriots fans Saturday.
“In fact, there’s a growing belief around the league that Hunter is the favorite to go to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 2 pick, according to high-ranking executives and coaches,” Howe wrote. “The Browns have been high on Hunter throughout the process, according to sources. And as he went through his route tree Friday during warmups, Browns general manager Andrew Berry watched intently from 10 yards away.”
The Patriots reportedly only sent vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden to Colorado’s pro day. That could be a concerning sign since teams typically send a large contingent to see and possibly meet a top prospect in person.
If the Browns or the New York Giants aren’t interested in Sanders and are infatuated with Hunter, that would leave the Patriots with few options, especially if those teams’ backup plan is Abdul Carter.
There still is time for teams to change their minds, but Hunter to the Patriots seemed to take a significant blow after the weekend.
