The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing early-season trouble at first base, with Freddie Freeman landing on the 10-day injured list.
The Dodgers are off to a red-hot 8-0 start heading into Friday’s clash with the Philadelphia Phillies. But with their World Series MVP sidelined, the team suddenly has a hole at first base that needs to be filled quickly.
Freeman was placed on the injured list Thursday after spraining his surgically repaired right ankle in a freak shower slip at home last weekend. The mishap came on the Dodgers’ off-day on Sunday.
MLB Network insider Jon Morosi weighed in on the situation, hinting at how the Dodgers might handle first base duties Friday at Citizens Bank Park.

“We will probably still continue to see a lot of Kike Hernandez over at first base, especially tonight they face the Phillies and lefty Jesús Luzardo. But certainly, this is some adversity for the Dodgers, long before the Ohtani heroics on Wednesday night,” Morosi said.
“There were some defensive issues that they encountered around the infield, which I think, perhaps, that’s an area where Kike just has to spend more time to get comfortable at first base. In fairness to him, he’s a great defender, but he’s not often at first base,” he added.
Morosi noted that despite his limited reps at first, Kiké Hernández remains a strong candidate to fill in for Freeman. Experience, he said, won’t be a deal-breaker.
“So a tough time for Freddie, we’re still waiting on the other side of the move for the Dodgers to see who’s gonna be activated. But again, I expect it’s going to be Kike Hernandez who has such a flair for the big moment, Lauren. He’ll be back in there, I would expect tonight against the lefty Luzardo.”
The Dodgers haven’t made it official just yet, but all signs point to Enrique Hernández stepping in at first base when they face the Phillies.
