Record-Breaking Memphis QB Could Be Packers’ Next Developmental Project

The Green Bay Packers have consistently invested in developmental quarterbacks, drafting Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt in 2023 before trading for Malik Willis a year later. “Every year, it’s important to put a lot of time into those guys, (to) identify them,” Brian Gutekunst said of quarterbacks at the Scouting Combine. “It’s a hard position to make it in this league.”

Malik Willis is currently Green Bay’s QB2, but he is entering the final year of his rookie deal and should hit the open market in the 2026 offseason. The Packers will need to find a new backup for Jordan Love, and there’s a prospect in this year’s draft who checks many of the boxes they look for in a backup/developmental quarterback.

Seth Henigan was a four-year starter at Memphis and holds the school’s all-time records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. He also posted a 34-16 record as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com projects him as a candidate for the bottom of a roster or a practice squad spot. Henigan is a pocket passer with solid accuracy. He tied with Jaxson Dart for the third-most big-time throws in college football last season. His 11 turnover-worthy plays tied for the 10th fewest among 57 quarterbacks with at least 400 dropbacks. He has a good feel for avoiding sacks but could improve his ability to create plays off schedule.

The Packers target quarterbacks with meaningful college experience and Combine attendance, and Henigan checks both boxes. However, given how well their offense adapted to Malik Willis’ play style, it’s fair to wonder if Brian Gutekunst could target a prospect whose skill set is more reminiscent of Willis’ style.

Green Bay wouldn’t have made the postseason last year without Malik Willis. While Jordan Love recovered from a sprained MCL, Willis led the Packers to a 2-0 record-ultimately the difference in securing a playoff spot. That should reinforce the importance of adding to the quarterback room and ensuring depth in case Love suffers another injury. Henigan is a prospect who could come in, sit behind Love and Willis, and eventually take over as Love’s backup. While teams could call about Willis, the Packers will likely let him play out the rest of his contract. The most probable scenario is Henigan as QB3, with no immediate pressure to play, allowing him to develop faster.
